Discussion: Real Madrid summer signings.

The summer transfer window opened on the 1st of June and Madrid are not wasting any time to splash their cash after a very disappointing season where they went trophyless, for the first time in over five years.

The club president Florentino Perez is known to spend the money when necessary as seen with the cases of Luis Figo,Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and this year Eden Hazard.

After losing their goal machine Cristiano Ronaldo last season to Juventus, the club has found it really difficult to get goals when needed and though Karim Benzema had a good season, it was not enough as other attacking players such as Gareth Bale,Marco Asensio and Mariano failed to live up to expectations, and the club has not failed to address the situation.

We haven’t gone halfway of June and Real Madrid have already acquired the services of Santos wonderkid Rodrygo, Eintracht Frankfurt striker Luka Jovic, Porto defender Eder Militao,Lyon left back Ferland Mendy and arguably the best player in the Premier League, Chelsea’s Eden Hazard.

With the blend of youth and experience Madrid have fixed a majority of their problems they had last season. Each signing will bring competition for various spots in the starting eleven.

In defense, Eder Militao is a young but brilliant defender who would bring competition to less rugged but more experienced Raphael Varane who underperformed this season.

The left back position over the years has been occupied by world class players, from Roberto Carlos to Marcelo. Mendy has big shoes to fill in. However Marcelo is far from his decline as he’s still firing from all cylinders for Madrid, he wouldn’t give up his starting spot easily. If there’s any part of the starting 11 that bests explains the competition I’m taking about, its the attack. Younger players like Vinicius and Rodrygo will be patient for starting positions as they are for the future. Hazard is a fixed starter obviously ( Madrid didn’t spent that amount of money to warm their bench). Benzema would face stiff competition from Luka Jovic however Benzema’s experience is complemented by Jovic’s youth. It would be interesting to see how Zizou works things out. Gareth Bale faces several transfer speculation and possible return to the EPL is foreseeable although the player wants to stay and prove his worth. Zidane however does not have him in his future plans. It doesn’t change the fact that he is a world class player and an attack consisting of Hazard Jovic and Bale or Hazard ,Benzema and Bale would definitely flourish.

Madrid are not finished as they are linked to two midfielders; Spurs Christian Eriksen and Manchester United’s Paul Pogba. Club president Perez wants Eriksen because of his technical ability with the ball while Zizou wants his fellow Frenchman due to his versatility in Midfield. Whichever decision is made, Madrid would have another world class midfielder in their books.

The interesting fact is that the club may not need to sell to balance those books due to FFP rules and regulations given they haven’t really spent a lot for the past few seasons and sold Cristiano Ronaldo and Alvaro Morata for €110 million and €65 million respectively.

Its definitely a brilliant summer for Madrid and its all thanks to one man again, Florentino Perez. He’s probably their first galactico.
