Selecting your first FPL squad.

fantasy premier league GW1 - The FFGeek team update
GW1 team

Remember that you have a squad of 15 players, consisting of:

  • 2 Goalkeepers
  • 5 Defenders
  • 5 Midfielders
  • 3 Forwards

The total value of your initial squad must not exceed £100 million and you can only select up to 3 players from a single Premier League team.

Let me add by saying there is no one way to success in FPL! it is your fantasy, your team…We can only give tips but the final decision lies with you😉

In selecting your first team, it is always advisable to have the first 3 to 5 fixtures of the season in mind, Knowing that you only have 1 free transfer per week. So lets check out some tips

Goalkeepers

Source of Points for GKs are majorly clean sheets and Saves. you can either choose a premium GK and a cheap back up or you select 2 value GKS and rotate depending on their fixtures.

For instance you can select Alisson (6.2m) and Button (3.9m), you know that unless injured, alisson will start every match and Liverpool % of cleansheet is high. On the other hand you can decide to go for the Save merchants from mid table teams. but no matter what you do, don’t waste your money on GKs.

Defenders

Source of points for defenders are majorly from Clean sheets, assists and Goals. The Defenders with the highest points in FPL are mostly fullbacks so don’t load your team with Center Backs. In the top 6 highest pointers this season only VVD is a CB the rest are full backs. So look for teams that have high % of keeping Clean sheets and also attack with their full backs.

I try as much as possible not to select 2 players from same team in my backline.

Midfielders

Just like defenders, the major source of points for midfielders are also from Goals, Assists and Clean sheets. here you want to select attacking midfielders and wingers especially from high scoring teams. Spend money on midfielders that score and assist regularly. You can also look at key-men from lower placed teams for bargains.

Forwards

Source of points for forwards are majorly from goals and assists. here you need to combine premium with Value due to funds constraint. Buy CFs that will assure you consistent goals and assists. Stay away from Players like Joelinton!!!!

General Tips

  • Look at OOP – (Out of Position) : FPL sometimes categorize players wrongly , a prime example is Lord Lundstram who is categorized as a Defender on FPL but he plays as a MF for Sheffield.
  • Look at Player’s goal participation ratio in the previous season for the club. for instance Rashford has contributed 43% to Man United goals this season…..Definitely a player to look at next season.

We will be here to give you further tips when the new season begins.

In our next post, we will be looking at FPL formations -Pros and Cons.
