It’s been 64 days since a football game was played due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the last one being Borrusia Monchengladbach’s 2-1 victory over FC Koln. Quite the wait we’ve had huh? Well here’s 5 things we can expect from the returning Bundesliga.

1. Excitement
Even if the games today end up being the most unattractive and boring, we can all admit that we are just happy football is back. The excitement of seeing a round leather object at the back of the net eclipses any tactical insights or pre-match analysis made. Wether the game is boring or the players rusty or the stadium not filled to its capacity, it’s secondary today, what’s most important is that we get to watch our favorite game once again.

2. Rustiness
When you’ve not trained or played a game for the past 9 weeks approximately, you’re most likely not going to function at 100%. Although most teams resumed training few days ago, you don’t expect these players to perform at their highest level. There’s going to be a tad touch of rustiness in these lads so you should probably reduce your expectations when watching these games, you may not get the scintillating football you want to see.

3. A Quiet Derby
The Revierderby (Dortmund Vs Shackle 04) is one of the fiercest and most intense derbies in the Bundesliga, and today’s episode doesn’t plan to be any less. However it’s going to be played behind closed doors hence it would be missing one important element of its glow, the fans. Signal Induna Park is known all round Europe for how terrific the atmosphere there can be. It’s probably the most intimidating atmosphere in the whole of Europe alongside Anfield.
“It’s a big challenge to play without fans in this kind of match,” said BVB head coach Lucien Favre. It goes to show that the atmosphere would certainly be missed in today’s derby. However for a fixture that rated among the top 3 fixtures of the year for both sides, it promises to be an exciting watch.

4. Emotions
Football is an emotional game, with various twists and turns, and the Bundesliga isn’t in any way different. These lads have missed the smell of the grass, the voices from the crowd (although they won’t be getting that) and the burning fire in their hearts that come from the putting the ball in the back of the net. Yes they aren’t going to be performing at their highest standards but they still want to win. Those at the top want to remain there and those at the relegation zone will take every single game like a final. That drive is going to steer so many emotions in the pitch. Harsh tackles, tactical fouls and going to various extents to ensure they win. Even questioning the referees decisions won’t be exempted. It’s all part of the game anyway, I’m pretty sure also missed that part too.
5. The relegation battle starts today!
Nobody knows the outcome or consequences of restarting the Bundesliga early enough given that Germany is not Covid-19 free. In as much as we hope it will be as minimal as possible, we also have to admit to the possibility of the football season closing if things go sideways just like the Ligue 1. The remaining 9 games left to the end of the Bundesliga season is going to be insane for the relegation teams. Every game is like a final. Nobody would want to drop points. With Duesseldorf and Bremen 4 and 6 points away from safety, they wouldn’t want to be having the same story and going through all that stress of court cases and signing petitions clamoring injustice like Amiens. They’ll take each game by the scruff of the neck and make the most of it.
Bayern, Dortmund and Leipzig at the top will also continue their contest for the title with every single point being as crucial as possible.
Ladies and gentlemen, football is back… in grand style.
